1. Thrilling story of nearly losing my life while working at my own hospital during a routine examination
“Many years ago, after completing my doctoral research project and graduating successfully, I was invited to stay and work at a famous university-affiliated hospital in Shanghai. During a routine kidney imaging examination, I was injected with an iodine contrast agent, but a skin test, considered necessary at the time, was not performed, which led to a severe allergic reaction. I almost lost consciousness instantly. Fortunately, one of my colleagues accompanying me noticed the abnormality in time and immediately called the doctors, who successfully resuscitated me, allowing me to narrowly escape death! This terrifying experience made me realize that even as a senior doctor and researcher with many years of medical experience in this very hospital, I almost lost my life due to systematic negligence in medical procedures. This begs the question: what about ordinary patients, and outsiders to the hospital?
2. Ridiculous story of avoiding unnecessary gallbladder surgery in the U.S.
After moving to the United States and working at NIH and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, I encountered another medical error. During one examination, doctors recommended gallbladder removal surgery, claiming that the results of the HIDA scan were not good. The young surgeon emphasized that the surgery was simple, fully covered by insurance, and had a quick recovery, but the lack of medical basis made me very angry. As an experienced surgeon, I knew exactly when gallbladder removal was necessary, and I did evidence-based medicine (EBM) research to confirm it. After some communication, the doctors stopped the unnecessary suggestion. To this day, 20 years later, my gallbladder remains problem-free, and I feel lucky to have avoided unnecessary surgery. Some of my relatives and colleagues, however, have suffered complications such as reflux gastritis from unnecessary gallbladder removal surgery.
3. Self-surgery: A helpless story of self-rescue when the medical system fails
Medical errors don’t just happen in major surgeries; small issues are affected as well. I once went to the dentist for a gum infection, suggesting that the pus be drained to relieve the pain, but was advised to see a gum specialist instead. I waited in pain for an entire day, and the specialist focused more on a comprehensive examination rather than addressing the urgent issue. In the end, he used a fine needle to pierce the abscess, but the incision was too small to effectively drain it. The pain returned on my way home, and I had to take matters into my own hands, using surgical principles to make a large incision for drainage with a scalpel. Though painful, the relief was swift, which made me realize the limitations of the medical system. In this context, it is essential for healthcare professionals across all fields to possess the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to address fundamental issues, especially in urgent care.
4. Unbelievable story of potential serious misdiagnosis due to ignoring medical history
Recently, a doctor suddenly called me, saying that my last tuberculosis blood test was positive, and I likely had tuberculosis, and needed to arrange an appointment to discuss tuberculosis treatment! The reason I felt so surprised was that during my last visit to the doctor, I only went for a stomach discomfort and requested a test for Helicobacter pylori. The doctor never mentioned anything about tuberculosis or a tuberculosis blood test, so why was there suddenly talk about tuberculosis? This reminded me that when I went to the lab for testing, I unexpectedly found out the doctor had also requested a tuberculosis blood test for me. The lab technician asked if I wanted to proceed with it, and I thought it wouldn’t hurt to do it, so I went ahead. Little did I know, the doctor seriously suspected I had tuberculosis and hadn’t even informed me as the patient! In fact, many years ago, I had tuberculosis and was completely cured after a year-long treatment at this very hospital, which can be evidenced by my passing both my graduate school entrance exam and postdoctoral medical examination at NIH in the United States. After informing the doctor’s assistant that I had a history of tuberculosis and had been fully cured, they still scheduled an appointment to discuss tuberculosis treatment. Is this due to a lack of understanding or ignorance of the patient‘s medical history?
In summary., these experiences are just some typical events from my personal experience, and similar medical errors have occurred countless times to my relatives and friends. Fortunately, most of them were corrected in time due to our efforts, preventing more serious harm. However, for countless ordinary patients who don’t have a medical background in their families, it’s hard to imagine how they can timely and correctly avoid such mistakes. After years of accumulation, this leaves me confused and worried, motivating me to continuously gather resources to help them in a broader and deeper way.
This is why we founded eHealthEBM+ (Meihua Xunyi), a third-party medical institution standing in a neutral position, which can help and guide patients, while also assisting medical personnel by filling the gaps in evidence-based medical research they are unable to conduct due to overwhelming workloads. Especially when there are disputes, we can offer neutral solutions purely from a scientific perspective to provide resolution for doctor-patient conflicts."

“When faced with the difficult decision regarding emergency stroke treatment for my elderly wife, eHealthEBM+ provided us with much-needed clarity. The attending doctor recommended a high-risk intracranial endovascular procedure due to the potential life-threatening risk of her condition worsening. However, given her age and health status, we were uncertain if this was the safest and most appropriate option. At the same time, we feared that refusing the procedure could result in sudden deterioration, as the doctor had warned.
Thankfully, we contacted eHealthEBM+ for scientific support, helping both us and the doctors make an informed final decision. Their team quickly reviewed her medical history, current condition, and imaging through AI-powered evidence-based analysis. They concluded that while her condition was serious, the immediate risk of sudden worsening was not as high as initially thought. Furthermore, the risks associated with the proposed intracranial procedure were substantial.
After carefully explaining the pros and cons, they guided us and our medical team toward a more conservative treatment plan, prioritizing her quality of life. Their recommendation proved to be the right one, as she began to improve and was soon transferred to the rehabilitation ward. Additionally, based on similar cases, they recommended trying blood-activating Chinese medicine, which proved effective in improving her symptoms. The support we received from eHealthEBM+ provided us with peace of mind and confidence that we made the right decision. I highly recommend eHealthEBM+ to any family facing tough medical decisions.”

After my husband, a mid-level government official in Beijing, was diagnosed with late-stage urachal cancer following the discovery of hematuria during a routine checkup, our world turned upside down. Despite undergoing surgery, his cancer had already metastasized widely, and subsequent treatments, including chemotherapy, were proving ineffective. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and to make matters worse, his surgical wound was healing poorly. The hospital imposed strict rules to prevent infection, confining him to his room and severely affecting his mental well-being.
Feeling hopeless, we sought outside help. Through a connection at Peking University, we found eHealthEBM+, and they quickly responded to our desperate situation. Their team showed great empathy for my husband’s plight, understanding that his busy career left little time for health monitoring, which led to a delayed diagnosis. They immediately gathered all of his medical records, treatment history, and current condition details for an AI-powered, Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) assessment.
In addition to their scientific approach, eHealthEBM+ combined traditional Chinese medicine with Western medical practices to develop a holistic treatment plan focused on conservative and supportive care. Their team recommended allowing my husband to take small risks, such as leaving the hospital room to enjoy the sunlight, which was crucial for his emotional health.
We shared eHealthEBM+’s recommendations with the hospital, and they adjusted his care plan accordingly. Thanks to their expertise, my husband spent his final days pain-free and full of hope, making the most of his remaining time. We are deeply grateful for their compassionate guidance during such a difficult period.”

As a 30-year-old woman from Yunnan, I struggled with infertility for over three years, despite trying both Western and traditional Chinese medicine treatments at local hospitals, all to no avail. In my village, the tradition holds that if a wife cannot bear children, the mother-in-law will pressure her son to divorce his wife. This added immense mental stress on me. Feeling hopeless, I was introduced to eHealthEBM+ through a recommendation on WeChat, and I reached out, seeking a new treatment solution.
The experts at eHealthEBM+ thoroughly reviewed my treatment history and discovered that the traditional Chinese medicine I had been prescribed lacked specificity. Additionally, I had suffered from prolonged menstrual periods, lasting up to 15 days each cycle, and local hospital treatments to regulate this had also failed. Through remote consultations and careful analysis of my health data—including symptoms and photos of my tongue—they diagnosed me with Qi deficiency and blood stasis infertility. Based on this, they created a personalized treatment plan, incorporating a new Chinese herbal formula.
To my amazement, after less than a month of treatment, I successfully became pregnant and later gave birth to a healthy baby girl. This not only resolved my standing within my family but also restored harmony and my own self-confidence. Furthermore, another woman with a similar condition also became pregnant within three months after following eHealthEBM+’s recommendations. We are both deeply grateful for the help and support of eHealthEBM+!
